The Las Vegas, New Mexico, area Subway® restaurants and Manger Regina Denardo is pleased to announce that track and field sophomore Shanice McPherson has been named the Subway Eat Fresh Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday (Feb. 2).
The big result came on Friday night (Jan. 30) in the long jump, where McPherson lept her way into the record books. Not breaking 5.85 meters all night, she blasted her way into the record books on her fifth attempt with a jaw-dropping leap of 6.49 meters (21'3.5"). That is believed to have broken the NCAA Division II indoor record by a centimeter and vaulted her to tops in the nation – second if you take in to account NCAA Division I athletes. She also easily broke the facility record.
The Cowgirls claimed the NCAA Division II Challenge title against CSU-Pueblo, 167-150.
New for the 2014-2015 school year, a Subway® Student-Athlete of the Week will be chosen every week for the athletic year. Every student-athlete chosen for the weekly award will be eligible to win the Subway Eat Fresh® Student-Athlete of the Year award following the 2014-2015 academic year. While the weekly award will be based on athletic prowess, the yearly award will be bestowed upon an athlete based on success not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and community involvement.
