LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Las Vegas, New Mexico, area Subway® restaurants and Manger Regina Denardo is pleased to announce that baseball redshirt freshman Curtis Hynes has been named the Subway Eat Fresh Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday (Feb. 23).
Hynes threw all 10 innings for the win and the Cowboys scored single tallies in the ninth and 10th as New Mexico Highlands (6-4) rallied past #10 West Texas A&M (8-4) 2-1 (10 innings) Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) in Las Vegas, N.M.
Hynes retired the Buffs in order (thanks in part to a double play in the second) in six of the 10 innings of the game to improve to a team-best 3-0. He only allowed four hits and an unearned run on 109 pitches on the day with one hit by pitch and no walks on four strikeouts. In fact, in innings 4-8, Hynes only allowed a hit by pitch.
Going to extras after Highlands scored the game-tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hynes gave up a single to begin the top of the 10th. However, three groundouts ended the Buffs threat. The Cowboys scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a walk, sacrifice bunt and senior Nick Gonzales’ game-winning double.
New for the 2014-2015 school year, a Subway® Student-Athlete of the Week will be chosen every week for the athletic year. Every student-athlete chosen for the weekly award will be eligible to win the Subway Eat Fresh® Student-Athlete of the Year award following the 2014-2015 academic year. While the weekly award will be based on athletic prowess, the yearly award will be bestowed upon an athlete based on success not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and community involvement.
