Nelvin Wilson

Nelvin Wilson is entering his sixth season as Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at New Mexico Highlands University.  A native of Farmington, N.M., Wilson continues to assist in building a nationally recognized soccer program in his home state.

Since arriving in 2009, Wilson has helped to create a winning atmosphere at NMHU, including the university’s first NCAA Division II national soccer tournament appearance in 2010.  During his time at NMHU, Wilson has worked closely with Coach Wagar in identifying and developing players which include, Region MVP, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference MVP, RMAC Freshman of the Year, and numerous RMAC All-Conference honors.  In 2011, the NMHU soccer program also received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America “Team Academic Award” for Team GPA.

As a previous central midfielder, Wilson brings a wealth of experience in the development of technical skills and tactical awareness. Wilson finished his collegiate playing career at Utah Valley University (2002-2004) where he captained his team to 3 consecutive berths in the NIRSA Collegiate Club National Tournament and a second place national finish in 2003. Wilson was named to the All-American team that year as a center midfielder. Coach Wilson originally began his collegiate soccer career as a freshman at national soccer powerhouse Yavapai College, located in Prescott, Ariz. While at Yavapai, Wilson saw plenty of playing time and success as a true freshman. The Roughriders finished the season as Arizona Conference Champions, Region 1 Champions, West District Champions, and took second in the nation as NJCAA Runner-ups in 1995.

Born and raised in Farmington, New Mexico, Wilson competed for Farmington High School from 1991-95. He was a 3-time All-District and 2-time All-State selection for the Scorpions, as well as District 1-4A Player of the Year in 1995. He led the State of New Mexico in scoring as a senior and was selected to play in the New Mexico High School All-Star game.

In 2003, Wilson was a member of the United Soccer League semi-pro Arizona Sahuaros and Utah Blitzz. Wilson also served an LDS Church mission to Little Rock, Ark. from August 1996 to August 1998.  He graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing.
