The NMHU Cowgirls captured their first RMAC victory with an exciting 74-73 win over University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at home on December 17. The Cowgirls managed to hold on in the final seconds of a game that featured ten lead changes, and emerged victorious from an exciting, intense, and action-packed conference battle. With their victory over the Mountain Lions the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve their record to 1-4 in the RMAC and 4-7 overall.
Domonique Rivera was the highlight of the Cowgirl's assault tonight leading all scorers with 17 points from 39 minutes of play. Rivera nabbed eight rebounds while making an impressive 7-8 from the free-throw line. The Cowgirl's
Whitley Coca added 13 points to the effort and had a great first half with five rebounds to add her total of six rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes of play for the night. Freshman
Alyssa Lopez came off the bench playing 21 minutes with 11 points including a superb 11-12 from the free throw line. The efforts of Rivera and Lopez helped the Cowgirl's reach a respectable 80% from the free throw line.
The Cowgirls survived in a high intensity battle against a UCCS team that earlier this season had defeated defending NCAA DII National Champion Emporia State. Head Coach Darling was pleased with her team's performance commenting, “That was a big win for us tonight. This young team is really starting to play with some confidence.” She felt the team was well prepared for the game against the Mountain Lions because of the great week of practice they had. The Cowgirls can use this win to continue their development towards future successes.
The Cowgirls will be in action again on 12/18 in a home conference game against the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves. The Thunderwolves visit the John A. Wilson Complex with a 3-2 RMAC record and a 6-3 overall record this season. Come out and support the Cowgirls. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
