The NMHU Cowboys had one of their best showings of the young 2010 season on 9/18, but it wouldn't be enough as the Cowboys would eventually fall to the OreDiggers of the Colorado School of Mines by a final score of 49-21. The Cowboy offense set a season high in offensive production with 377 yards for the day as well as a season high passing mark as the Cowboys threw for 326 yards in the air against the stingy OreDigger defense. The Cowboys played well and hope to get better this week as they gear up to make the trip to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on the Mavericks of Mesa State College on 9/25.
Offensively, the Cowboys finally seemed to find their way. They ran the ball hard against a very good defense and found some holes in the CSM secondary to balance their attack. The one thing that the Cowboy offense didn't fix from the previous weeks was their turnovers. The Cowboys would throw four interceptions on the day. The Cowboys would finish the day with 51 yards rushing and 326 yards passing. Robbie Armijo would lead the way for the quarterbacks as he completed 16 of 28 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown as well as one interception thrown.
Kevon Williams would lead the receiving core with some impressive numbers as well. Williams would finish the day with seven catches for 106 yards and one touchdown. Williams also had a great day returning the ball for the Cowboys. Williams finished the day with five kick-off returns for 208 yards with a long of 94 yards.
Defensively, the Cowboys would hold strong against the potent CSM offense for most of the game. Quick change of possession as well as some momentum building catches would carry the OreDiggers past the Cowboys. The Cowboy defense would allow 148 yards on the ground and 361 yards passing for a total of 509 yards for the day. The Cowboy defense would fly around the entire day and make plays throughout as the Cowboys forced four CSM fumbles and regained three of them. Cordelle Nugent would lead the way for the defense with an astonishing 19 tackles, two for a loss of six yards and two forced fumbles. DeAndre' Clemons would have the biggest return for the defense on the day with a 57 yard fumble return as well as one more fumble recovery that he downed. Clemons would also have six tackles for the day along with two pass break-ups.
The Cowboys played their best game thus far in the 2010 season and hope to get better this week as they gear up to make the trip to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on the Mavericks of Mesa State College on 9/25.
