The NMHU Cowboys fell for the first time in the 2011 season to the Mountaineers of Western State College by a final score of 15-14 on 10/1. The Cowboys started out on fire as they took an early 7-0 lead after Keondric Reynolds would connect with Kevon Williams on a wide receiver pass for the first score of the game. The Mountaineers would answer back with a 32 yard field goal by Lloyd Tucker to send the 'Pokes into halftime with a 7-3 lead.  Tucker would put more points on the board with a pair of field goals to put the Mountaineers in the lead going into the fourth quarter 9-7. The Cowboys, with their quick strike offense, answered back on their very next possession with an 88 yard touchdown off a catch and run by Jequerie Proctor to put the Cowboys back in the lead 14-9. The Mountaineers would not say die as they would capitalize on an interception of Nick Ponce and turn that into a Tucker field goal to inch closer to the Cowboys 14-12.  Last second heroics by the Mountaineer offense spelled doom for the Cowboys in the final minutes of the game. With the Cowboys leading 14-12 with 3:42 left to play, the Mountaineers drove the ball 74 yards down the field eating up precious time to set up another Tucker field goal from 27 yards out with one second left in the game to put the Mountaineers up for good 15-14. During their game winning drive, the Mountaineers converted two fourth down situations to keep their drive alive. With the loss, the Cowboys are now 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in RMAC play.

Offensively, the Cowboys would finish the game with 374 yards of total offense (298 yards passing and 76 yards receiving). The Cowboys struggled with the run game against the staunch Mountaineer defense as Jequerie Proctor led the Cowboys in rushing with 37 yards on nine carries. Nick Ponce finished the game completing 19 of 40 passes for 153 yards and one interception. Kevon Williams finished the day with 70 yards receiving on five catches and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Cowboys would hold the Mountaineers to 228 yards of total offense (221 yards passing and seven yards rushing). The Cowboys held two of the three Western State running backs to negative yards rushing as well as recorded three sacks on the day. The Cowboys would also break-up six Mountaineers passes throughout the game. Jordan Campbell, Cordelle Nugent and Devin Howard would lead the way for the Cowboys defensively. Campbell would finish with six tackles (three of those tackles for loss) and two quarterback hurries. Nugent finished with six tackles and one sack for a loss of two yards. Howard would round out the top three with four tackles on the day.

The Cowboys will look to regroup over the week as they prepare for Adams State College. The Cowboys host the Grizzlies of Adams State on 10/8 for their 2010 Homecoming game.
