The NMHU Cowgirls Soccer team looked determined in their 2-0 home victory over the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo, on 10/2, at Perkins Stadium. The Cowgirls' attack was on form in the game, scoring their first goal in the 3rd minute of the game then adding another in the second half. The Cowgirls' defense played very well in the game, stifling a Thunderwolves attack that only managed three shots on goal. Cowgirl keeper
Scottie Prince made three solid saves in goal and organized the defense in the shutout win. With the win the Cowgirls move to a 2-4 record in the RMAC and 3-6 in overall play.
The Cowgirls started the game looking to rebound from their poor run of late. The attack was taken to the Thunderwolves from the outset. Cowgirls' midfielder
Britny Cottrell intercepted a Thunderwolves' pass and played a through ball to striker
Julissa Rodriguez. Rodriguez dribbled the ball into the attacking third of the pitch on the left side of midfield and took it down to the goal line. Rodriguez stopped the ball and switched to her right foot, crossing the ball from just outside to the middle of the six yard box. The ball deflected off the head of a Thunderwolves defender and Cowgirls' midfielder
Autumn Woods jumped up, heading the ball into the right side of the goal. The 3rd minute goal, Woods second of the season, gave the Cowgirls the early 1-0 lead. The Cowgirls maintained control of the first half of play and only allowed CSU-Pueblo three shots in the half. Cowgirls' keeper
Scottie Prince deftly saved both of the Thunderwolves' shots that were on target in the half.
The Cowgirls once again started the second half on the attack as Rodriguez took a shot in the 48th minute that was just wide to the right of goal. Play settled into the middle of the pitch until the Cowgirls came away with their second goal in the 64th minute. Cowgirls' midfielder
Keenya Pierre intercepted a Thunderwolves' pass in CSU-Pueblo half of midfield and slipped a tricky through ball into the feet of striker Rodriguez. Rodriguez dribbled the ball past two Thunderwolves' defenders into the penalty box and beat the keeper with a flick of the ball off her right foot into the left corner of the goal. Rodriguez's fifth goal of the season gave the Cowgirls the 2-0 lead. Cowgirls' keeper
Scottie Prince did a good job of organizing the defense and the Cowgirls controlled the remainder of the half. Although CSU-Pueblo managed five shots in the second half, only one of those was on target. The Thunderwolves were issued a yellow card in the second half. When the final whistle sounded the Cowgirls had triumphed with the 2-0 victory.
