Box Score The NMHU Cowgirls Basketball team notched their second victory of the new season, 96-77, on the road against the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. They continued to pile on the pressure and at the 14:38 mark in the first half they were up 19-9. The Aggies were able to cut the lead to just one point with 11:38 left in the half with a 9-0 run. Both teams continued this pace for the remainder of the half, until the Cowgirls were able to take a 13 point lead into halftime, with the score 53-40. The Cowgirls came out of the break and immediately began to pile on the points. With just 39 seconds played in the second half they had jumped out to a 17 point lead. The Aggies tried to mount a comeback but the Cowgirls' defense never let them get closer than 14 points. The Cowgirls enjoyed their biggest lead of the game, at 22 points with just 4:15 left in the game. When the final buzzer sounded the Cowgirls had grabbed a comfortable 19 point road victory. The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, are looking good in the new season with a 2-0 record in overall play.
Alyssa Lopez was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls. She put up 20 points, thanks to shooting an impressive 4-6 from beyond the three-point line. Lopez was on fire in her 27 minutes on the court, shooting 8-15 from the field, and adding two rebounds and two assists.
China Smith continued to look in good shape in her second game of the season and almost added her second double-double of the season, missing by just one rebound. Smith scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds in her 15 minutes of play. She shot 6-8 from the field, and made three of her four free throw shots.
Trish Simpson rounded out the Cowgirls' top scorers in the game with 13 points. She shot 5-9 from the field with six rebounds and two steals in her 24 minutes on the court.
The Cowgirls continue to get good production out of their deep bench, which was highlighted in this game by junior
Debbie Chavez and freshman
Eboni Jacobs. Both Chavez and Jacobs helped the Cowgirls' efforts with 10 points and four rebounds apiece.
The Cowgirls will be in action again on 11/30, as host the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University at Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M. The Cowgirls will be hosting the second game of the home and home matchup with the Aggies with a scheduled tip-off time of 7 pm.
