The NMHU Cowgirls captured a road victory tonight in an RMAC game against Regis University 59-56. Regis looked to be in control for most of the game including leading by as much as nine points, but the Cowgirls never stopped fighting and came out with the three point victory on the road in Denver. With their victory over the Rangers the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve their record in the RMAC to 8-12 and 13-15 in overall play.
Whitley Coca was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls in the game putting up 12 points. Coca went 4-9 from the field, 2-2 from the free throw line and made two of her six three point attempts. She would also add six rebounds and three assists in the game.
China Smith continued her strong play by adding her seventh double-double of the season. Smith scored 10 points and grabbed an impressive 15 rebounds in the contest to aid the Cowgirls efforts.
Trish Simpson had a great night in the rebounding category securing 13 boards in the game. She also helped the Cowgirls scoring efforts on the night shooting a perfect 100% from the charity stripe (4-4) and making two of her seven field goal attempts to score eight points in the game.
The Cowgirls kept the game close early on but Regis would jump out to a quick seven point lead with 15:17 left in the first half. The Cowgirls fought back to close to within three points but the Rangers again made a run to extend their lead to nine with 8:15 left in the half. When the teams went into the locker room for half time the Cowgirls had knocked the Rangers' lead down to six, with the score going into the break at 29-23.
Regis scored first in the second half with a three point basket to make the lead nine points once again, but the Cowgirls were not done and a three pointer by
Alyssa Lopez brought the lead down to only one point with 15:33 remaining in the game. The Cowgirls continued to whittle away at the lead and another three point basket by Lopez tied the game up with 12:53 remaining. Regis continued their attempts to put the game away but a three pointer by
Whitley Coca gave the Cowgirls their first lead of the game with only 3:55 left. The Rangers couldn't answer and the Cowgirls made some key shots down the stretch never giving up their lead. When the final buzzer sounded the Cowgirls had captured their eighth conference win of the season 59-56, grabbing a crucial road victory in the RMAC. The win moves the Cowgirls up in the RMAC standings to ninth place only one spot out of post season play with two games remaining in the season.
The NMHU women's basketball team will continue conference action tomorrow 2/19 in an RMAC road contest against Metro State College in Denver. The Cowgirls will visit the Auraria Event Center to play a Roadrunner team that is ranked #1 in the conference with a 19-1 RMAC record and 23-1 in overall play this season.
