The NMHU Cowgirls dropped a conference home game against Fort Lewis College 98-62. The Skyhawks came into the game ranked fourth in NCAA Division II Women's Basketball and in second place in the RMAC. With their loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 6-11 record in the RMAC and 10-14 in overall play.
China Smith led the Cowgirls efforts tonight recording her sixth double-double of the season. Smith scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to accomplish her second consecutive double-double. She would add one steal and one assist in her 31 minutes on the court. Cowgirl
Briana Gholston also contributed 16 points to the team's effort. Gholston played 31 minutes in the game and added six rebounds, two assists and a steal to her tally.
Domonique Rivera also ended up in double figures scoring 10 points for the Cowgirls. Rivera would add four rebounds, one assist and one steal in her 31 minutes of playing time.
Fort Lewis was led by junior Forward Dana Schreibvogel who managed to reach double-double figures as well, scoring 25 points and securing 10 boards to help in the Skyhawks victory.
The Cowgirls started the game strong emerging with an eight point lead after four minutes of play. Fort Lewis fought to keep the game close but the Cowgirls were able to extend their lead to nine with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Cowgirls tried to keep the Skyhawks at bay but the lead fell to only one point midway throught the first half. Fort Lewis took the lead 45 seconds later and would never look back eventually securing a 13 point lead at halftime.
The Cowgirls were first to score out of the break on a free throw shot by
China Smith but Fort Lewis continued their domination in the second half. The Cowgirls were unable to manage the fourth ranked DII team in the nation and the lead continued to grow in favor of the Skyhawks.
The NMHU women's basketball team will be in action again on 2/7 in a non-conference home match-up against Johnson and Wales University (Colo.). The Wildcats will visit John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas to complete the non-conference series with the Cowgirls. Tip off for the game on Wednesday is set for 5 pm.
