Cowgirls Capture Victory Against Wildcats 100-85

The NMHU Cowgirls captured a win tonight in a non-conference home game against Johnson and Wales Univ. (Colo.) 100-85. The Wildcats kept the game close early but the Cowgirls were able to put a few scoring runs together to control the game and win by a comfortable margin with five Cowgirls in double figures. With their win the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve their overall
record to 11-14 while remaining at 6-11 in the RMAC.

Cowgirl Briana Gholston led all scorers with 24 points in her team's victory. Gholston hit 10-12 from the field for an impressive 83%. She would also add five rebounds, three assists, and a steal to her total in the game playing 31 minutes. China Smith continued her late season success scoring 16 points and eight rebounds in her 29 minutes on the court. Smith played well defensively also grabbing seven steals and blocking one shot to aid the Cowgirls efforts on the night. Domonique Rivera rounds out the Cowgirl's top scorers for the third consecutive game by adding 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal in 32 minutes of playing time. Gholston, Smith and Rivera have been the Cowgirls top performers for the last three games.

Two other Cowgirls ended the night in double figures as Alyssa Lopez and Marissa Magalei scored 14 and 13 points respectively in a good offensive showing for the team. 

The game was close in the first half as the Wildcats were able to keep pace with NMHU. The Cowgirls managed to pull ahead by seven points at the midway point of the first half but JWU came back to tie the game with 3:36 remaining in the half. The Cowgirls then exploded for 12 unanswered points before the Wildcats could respond. The teams went into the half with the Cowgirls leading 51-43.

The Cowgirls came out of the break in control. They extended their lead to 12 points and would maintain the momentum despite the Wildcats efforts to attempt a comeback. With one minute left in the game the Cowgirls were able to gain a 15 point lead as Marissa Magalei made two free throws and would hold on to win 100-85. The Cowgirls win the non-conference series 2-0 against JWU with the win tonight and have five games remaining in the regular season.

The NMHU women's basketball team will continue conference action this weekend 2/11-12 as they play host to RMAC opponents Mesa State and Western State. The Cowgirls play their final two home games of the regular season this weekend as they fight to keep their post-season hopes alive. The Mavericks visit John A. Wilson Complex ranked fourth in the RMAC with a 11-6 conference record while the Mountaineers come in at the eighth spot in the conference at 7-10 in RMAC play. Tip off for both games is set at 6pm.
