The NMHU Women's Basketball captured a comfortable road victory against their in-state rivals, the Mustangs of Western New Mexico University, by the final score of 79-52. “The Silent Assassin,”
Alyssa Lopez, took control of the game from the very start by dropping a big three-point shot out of the gate and grabbing a steal on the ensuing Mustang possession. Lopez would dominate the first half of play, putting up 17 points and grabbing five steals in the half. When the teams went into the locker room for halftime, the Cowgirls had a 13 point lead. The Cowgirls continued the scoring onslaught in the second half, quickly putting up five points in the first minute of the half. The Cowgirls never let their foot off the gas and continued to roll up the points, leading by as much as 28 points in the second half of play. When the final buzzer sounded, the Cowgirls had come away with the 27 point victory on the road against WNMU. With the win the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve to a 5-8 record in the RMAC and 9-8 in overall play.
Alyssa Lopez was the Cowgirls' leading scorer in the game with 24 points. She shot 8-17 from the field, hit two three-pointers, and made six of her nine free-throw attempts. Lopez would add five steals, four rebounds, and an assist in her team leading 28 minutes of playing time.
Ashley Godfrey had a solid night for the Cowgirls by scoring 13 points in her 19 minutes on the court. She had seven points in the first half and added another six points in the second half. Godfrey grabbed two steals, shot 5-7 from the field, and was a perfect 2-2 behind the three-point arc in the second half.
Rounding out the top scorers for the Cowgirls was
Whitley Coca. She scored nine points in the game. Coca grabbed a total of eight rebounds, had a team high four assists, and stole the ball twice in her 21 minutes in the game.
The Cowgirls had a great night on the boards, with 58 total rebounds, that led to 34 second chance points.

Ashley Zaragoza, and
Whitley Coca led the team in rebounds with eight apiece. The Cowgirls also scored 24 points off of turnovers in the game.
The Cowgirls will continue conference action again, on 1/27, as they host the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo, in Las Vegas, N.M. The Thunderwolves are currently ranked third in the RMAC with an 11-2 conference record and 14-3 in overall play. CSU-Pueblo won the first game of the conference series, in Pueblo, Colo., 67-54, on 12/17. The game is scheduled for a 6 pm tip-off time, with the Cowboys taking to the court shortly after the completion of the women's game. If you can't make it to the John A.
