Cowboys Outlast Yellow Jackets 46-31

Box Score Spearfish, S.D. - The NMHU Cowboys surged past RMAC newcomer Black Hills State University 46-31 on 10/27 in Spearfish, S.D. The Pokes battled both the Yellow Jackets and the wet and cold elements en route to their seventh win of the season. Despite having six turnovers in the game, the Cowboys regrouped offensively to take down the Yellow Jackets on the road. With the win, the Cowboys improve to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in RMAC play. The Cowboys are currently tied for second place in the latest RMAC standings with Chadron State College, the Cowboys lone RMAC loss of the season.

Despite the unfavorable conditions, the Cowboys finished the day with 556 yards of total offense (185 rushing and 371 passing).  556 yards is the NMHU offense's third best performance of the season.

EJ Woods led the rushing attack for the Pokes with 24 carries for 94 yards on the ground and one score. Lavelle Peterson followed suit with 90 yards on 13 carries and a season high three touchdowns.

Emmanuel Lewis extended his string of 300+ passing yard games to eight straight as he completed 24 of 39 passes for 371 yards and two touchdown connections.

Darius Davis led the Cowboy receiving core with 128 yards on four catches and one touchdown. Davis's performance against BHSU was his sixth 100+ yard game in the 2012 season. Kevon Williams finished the day with four catches for 66 yards.

Defensively, the Cowboys held the Yellow Jackets to 452 yards of offense (180 rushing and 272 receiving). Karldell Dunning, Jared Koster and Shenard Holton led the way for the Pokes.

Dunning finished the game with 11 tackles, one interception with a return of seven yards and three pass break-ups.

Koster tallied nine tackles, one tackle for a loss of one yard and one pass break-up.

Holton rounds out the top three Cowboy performers with eight tackles and two pass break-ups.

The Cowboys will continue their road warrior ways as they travel to Pueblo, Colo. on 11/3 to take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo. The Thunderwolves currently sit atop the RMAC standing with a perfect 8-0 overall record and a 6-0 RMAC record. The Thunderwolves are also currently ranked #1 in the country according to the latest AFCA Coaches Poll. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
