Cowboys Drop Mountaineers 31-17

Box Score The NMHU Cowboys held off a very stout Western State Colorado University team on 10/6 for a 31-17 Homecoming victory in front of a raucous home crowd. The Pokes braved both the conditions and the Mountaineers to roll up 437 yards of offense en route to their third straight victory. With the win, the Cowboys remain undefeated in RMAC play and 5-1 on the season.
“Western State is a very well coached team. They gave us some fits at times, but we were able to gather ourselves and get the win,” commented NMHU Head Coach Eric Young following his Cowboys 31-17 win over the WSCU Mountaineers.

Offensively the Cowboys finished the game with 437 yards (361 passing and 76 yards rushing). Emmanuel Lewis completed 25 of 50 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns. Darius Davis led the NMHU receiving core with seven catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Wayne Jacobs led the Cowboy rushing attack with nine rushes for 35 yards.

Defensively the Pokes held the Mountaineers 267 yards for the day (170 yards rushing and 97 yards passing). Jared Koster led the Cowboys with 15 tackles with one tackle for a loss and a one sack for a loss of eight yards. DiAmaal Holmes finished with 12 tackles and one tackle for a loss of one yard. Devin Howard rounds out the top three for the Cowboys with seven tackles, two tackles for a loss of three yards, one fumble recovery, one sack for a loss of two yards and one quarterback hurry.

The Pokes will hit the road on 10/13 as they take on the Grizzlies of Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
