Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. - The NMHU Women's basketball team won their second straight conference game of the 2012-13 season by defeating the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines 84-82 at the John A Wilson Complex. The Cowgirls played tenaciously on the defensive side for the entire 40 minutes, and showed wonderful team play by having three players score in double digits. The Cowgirls battled with the Orediggers throughout the first half with both teams exchanging six lead changes and five score ties. NMHU never looked to get rattled keeping the game close, never falling behind more than five points before the Cowgirls were able to make it a two point game going into halftime. Out the locker room the Cowgirls captured the lead 39-38 and quickly established control of the game thanks to athletic play of
Alyssa Lopez. The Cowgirls unfortunately had to fight back from an eight point hole halfway through the second half, but the Orediggers started letting the Cowgirls back into the game by letting NMHU slim the lead to 66-65. With the Cowgirls making some critical shots with time running out found momentum to make the game 82-82 with a pair of free throws by
Alyssa Lopez with 26 seconds left. Within 18 seconds later Lopez made the eventual game winning lay-up to give the Cowgirls the lead for good to earn their second RMAC victory. With the win the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve to 2-0 in conference play and 4-4 overall.
Alyssa Lopez was the scoring leader for the Cowgirls in the game. Lopez tops all scores with 24 points going 7-15 from the field and 3-3 from three-point land. Lopez added four rebounds to her totals in 35 minutes played.
Kate Cryderman was the second highest scoring Cowgirl in the game with 17 points going 7-10 from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line in her 19 minutes of playing time.
Rounding out the top performers is
Indre Mikelenaite who came off the bench to score 10 points going 3-7 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line. Mikelenaite also added five rebounds, one assist, and one steal in her 17 minutes played.
The Cowgirls will continue RMAC play, on 12/7, as they take on the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University. Western State (0-2 in conference and 0-6 in overall play) is currently ranked 14th in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off time, with the Cowboys taking the court after the completion of the women's game.
