Box Score Grand Junction, Colo. - The NMHU Women's Basketball team lost to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, 85-51. The Mavericks have been recently ranked #25 in the December 4th issue of the USA TODAY Sports DIVISION II TOP 25 COACHES' POLL. The Mavericks took control of their home court advantage from the very start and would never look back. Colorado Mesa got out to an early lead, going up 13-4 at the 15:43 mark. The Cowgirls were down 30-15, with 7:48 left in the first half. The Cowgirls tried to mount a comeback but it just wasn't to be and when the buzzer sounded to end the first half of play Colorado Mesa took a 18 point lead into the locker room, 46-28. The Cowgirls started out in the second half the same way they began, taking 7:06 till the Cowgirls scored their first point at the 13:54. The Cowgirls kept fighting throughout the second half, but when the final buzzer sounded it was the Mavericks that would come away victorious on their home court, 96-56. With the road loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 3-1 record in the RMAC and 3-5 in overall play.
Mesa got solid production from their entire team with three players scoring in double figures. The Mavericks took advantage of the Cowgirls' 29% field goal percentage, while shooting 44% from the field and 92% from the charity line.
Junior wing,
China Smith was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls with 13 points and eight rebounds in her 20 minutes played for her team.
Junior guard,
Alyssa Lopez scored 12 points for the Cowgirls in her team leading 32 minutes on the court. Lopez added one steal, one rebound, and shot 4-8 from the field in the game.
Sophomore guard,
Cwynnci Lobaugh rounds out the top scores for the Cowgirls with 12 points going 3-4 from behind the three point line in her 20 minutes played for her team.
The Cowgirls will be in action again, on 12/14, at the John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M., as they take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
