Eric Young continued their winning ways against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University on 9/1 as the Pokes defeated the Greyhounds 42-14 in front of a raucous home crowd in Las Vegas, N.M. The Cowboys would fall behind early as the Greyhounds jumped out to an early 14-0 lead capitalizing on some NMHU mistakes. The Pokes would then gather themselves and score with 2:40 remaining in the second quarter as
Taylor Genuser hooked up with
Kevon Williams for 25 touchdown pass to pull the Pokes within one score taking NMHU into the half trailing 14-7.
The second half would be a different story as the Pokes came out on fire. The Pokes gave their old scoreboard a great farewell as the lit the board up scoring 35 unanswered points in the second half. The newly donated Southwest Capital Bank scoreboard will be installed by the Cowboys next home game when they take on RMAC foe, the OreDiggers from the Colorado School of Mines.
Offensively, the Pokes finished with 345 total yards (58 yards rushing and 287 passing).
Keith Bellamy led the way for the Pokes rushing attach gaining 28 yards on seven carries.
John Webster led all receivers with 130 yards on seven catches and one score with a long play of 70 yards.
Taylor Genuser finished the night completing 24 of 37 passes with two interceptions for 287 yards and four touchdowns.
De'joshua Johnson finished the night with five punt returns for 48 yards and one touchdown on a 45 yard punt return. Johnson also had one kick-off return for 58 yards.
Defensively the Cowboys held the Greyhounds to 248 total yards (143 rushing and 105 passing).
Jordan Campbell,
Devin Howard and Montel Morris led the way for the Pokes. Campbell finished the night with 10 tackles, four for a loss of 22 yards, two forced fumbles and two sacks for a loss of 11 yards. Howard finished with 10 tackles, one tackle for a loss of 3 yards and one sack for a loss of two yards. Morris rounds out the top three with nine tackles and one tackle for a loss of one yard.
The Pokes will hit the road to take on their next opponent as they travel to Durango, Colo. to take on RMAC opponent the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Durango, Colo.
