Cowgirls Struggle on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The NMHU Cowgirl Soccer team, led by Head Coach Justin Wagar, fell to 0-4 in the RMAC and 2-6 in overall play after losing both games of their conference road trip this weekend, 9/21-23.   The Cowgirls were bested on Friday, 9/21, by RMAC leaders Colorado Mesa University by the final score of 3-0, in Grand Junction, Colo.  Then on Sunday, 9/23, the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines were victorious against the Cowgirls, in Golden, Colo., by the final score of 5-1.

On Friday, 9/21, the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University put pressure on the Cowgirls early, scoring two goals by the 18th minute.  The Mavericks added their third goal of the game in the 81st minute.  The Cowgirls were able to match the Mavericks' shot opportunities, but they were unable to put the ball in the net.  The game was a physical affair with a combined 21 fouls and three yellow cards. 

On Sunday, 9/23, the Cowgirls faced the formidable Orediggers from the Colorado School of Mines.  The Orediggers took control of the game early, scoring their first goal in the 19th minute, and never let up.  At halftime, the Orediggers enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 lead. 

The Cowgirls found their only goal of the game in the 69th minute off of a corner kick.  Cowgirl striker Marci Johnson took the corner and placed the ball in the penalty box.  Cowgirl defender Molly Enenbach found the ball and scored the goal from right in front of the net.  With the score at 4-1, the Orediggers managed to score their fifth goal in the 79th minute.  When the final buzzer sounded to end the game the Orediggers had won the game 5-1.

The Orediggers defense played a great game, holding the Cowgirls to only five shots, while their offense applied constant pressure on the Cowgirls with 13 shots of their own.  The game, in Golden, Colo., was also a physical affair with a combined 28 fouls and three yellow cards. 

The Cowgirls will continue conference play on Friday, 9/28, as the host the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo in Las Vegas, N.M.  The Thunderwolves are currently in eighth place in the RMAC, with a 1-3 conference record and 1-5-1 in overall play.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.  If you can't make it out to Perkins Stadium to watch the Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the game live on the America One Network.
