Box Score The NMHU Cowgirl Soccer team was victorious at home, on 9/28, against the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo. The Cowgirls took the lead early in the first half and never looked back. They ended up getting two more goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. The ball stayed in midfield for the majority of the second half and when the final horn sounded to end the game the Cowgirls had triumphed by the final score of 3-0. The Cowgirls went on the attack from the beginning. In the 21st minute, they were awarded a corner kick that would lead to their first goal. Striker
Marci Johnson took the corner and bent the ball into the penalty box. The ball landed at the top of the six-yard box and midfielder
Autumn Woods wasted no time in kicking it into the back of the net, for her second goal of the season.
The Cowgirls' second goal came in the 30th minute when defender
Allison Jordan cross the ball from 40 yards out on the right wing. The ball curled into the penalty box where striker
Crystal Schuder was waiting. Schuder set herself and drilled the ball with her right foot into the back of the net, giving the Cowgirls the 2-0 lead.
Barely three minutes later, the Thunderwolves commited a foul at the top of their penalty box. The Cowgirls were awarded a free-kick from 20 yards out at the right center of the box. Striker
Kelsie Roberts stepped up to take the spot-kick and launched a rocket right through the defenders into the left side of the net, scoring her fourth goal of the season. The Cowgirls played a good first half and took the 3-0 lead into halftime.
At the start of the second half, it was the Cowgirls who pushed the action. They went on full attack, pressing for more goals. CSU-Pueblo tried to mount a comeback, but despite the intensity from both squads there was to be no more goals scored in the game. When the final horn sounded, the Cowgirls had captured their first conference win of the 2012 season, by the final score of 3-0.
The Cowgirls' offense played well against CSU-Pueblo. They outshot the Thunderwolves 14-7. The Cowgirls' defense did a great job of keeping the Thunderwolves from posing any real threat to their goal. Both teams played an aggressive game, resulting in a combined 24 fouls, but despite this the game was fast paced.
The Cowgirls will continue conference play on Sunday, 9/30, as the host the Grizzlies of Adams State University in Las Vegas, N.M. The Grizzlies are currently in seventh place in the RMAC, with a 2-3 conference record and 4-5 in overall play. The last time the two teams met, on 9/16 in Alamosa, Colo., the Grizzlies managed a dramatic three goal comeback in the last 15 minutes of the game.
