NMHU Cowgirls played as if they had something to prove on Friday night, 9/6, at Perkins Stadium. Tonight's game was played in a chilly environment with defense on the mind of both squads. . The Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University established themselves early and often in the match up. The Cowgirls held an impressive first half shutting down the Mountaineers and holding a defensive stand in the first half to 0-0. The Cowgirls were full force in the second half showing the home town crowd just how competitive they are when their backs are against the wall.
The Cowgirls showed an impressive offensive attack by out shooting the Mountaineers with attempted scoring opportunities 26-12. Having the determination and will power coached in them by Head Coach
Justin Wagar the Cowgirls scored in the second half in the 76 minute. Leading the Cowgirls with the lone score of the game was
Autumn Woods which was assisted with the goal by
Brooke D'Onofrio and
Marci Johnson. With an impressive corner kick getting the defensive off guard the Cowgirls scored the game winning goal. Leading the Cowgirls on the defensive side was goalie
Kayla Clarke with three impressive goal saves.
Mountaineers played with class and intensity but could not delegate a score in the final minutes of Fridays night's game. Although they are members of the RMAC, the Mountaineers just recently began their Women's Soccer program and as a result they will not participate in RMAC competition until the 2013 season.
