Box Score Durango, Colo. – The NMHU Women's Basketball team struggled on the road in Durango, Colo. as they fell victim to the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College, on 1/11, by the final score of 78-58.  With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 3-6 record in the RMAC and 3-10 in overall play.

The Cowgirls took the initial 4-0 lead in the game, but the Skyhawks quickly regrouped and began to take control of the game.  Fort Lewis went on a 7-0 run and looked to have found a good rhythm early.

The Cowgirls kept the game close for the first ten minutes of play, but the Skyhawks had too much firepower on the court and they began to pull away.  The Skyhawks were hitting all their shots and the Cowgirls were having trouble converting baskets.   When the buzzer sounded to end the first half, Fort Lewis took a 26 point lead (52-26) into the locker-room.

The Cowgirls seemed to respond to Coach Darling's halftime instructions, because they started out the second half with a 7-0 run.  But the Skyhawks were holding on to a comfortable lead and the Cowgirls would need a gigantic effort to get back into the game.

The Cowgirls kept working hard on the court and Alyssa Lopez hit a three-point shot with 14:45 left to play, cutting the Fort Lewis lead down to 16 points (60-44).  That was as close as the Cowgirls would get on the scoreboard and the Skyhawks regained the momentum.

Fort Lewis was playing well on their home court and they had regained their largest lead of 26 points (78-52) with 4:56 left in the game.  The Cowgirls kept playing hard and managed to cut into the lead, but it would not be enough.  When the final buzzer sounded, the Skyhawks had triumphed 78-58.

Freshman post Kate Cryderman led the Cowgirls in scoring with 16 points.  She played 22 minutes, adding one blocked shot, a rebound, and a steal to her night's totals.

Alyssa Lopez scored 12 points for the Cowgirls in her 39 minutes on the court.  She was perfect from three-point range (2-2) and the free-throw line (4-4), but she struggled from the field (3-8).  Lopez added three steals, three assists, and three rebounds in the game.

China Smith and Michelle Traynham both scored 10 points against Fort Lewis.  Smith led the Cowgirls with seven rebounds, adding four rebounds and one steal in 26 minutes of playing time.  Traynham grabbed four rebounds, one steal, and blocked a shot in 33 minutes on the court.

The Cowgirls will continue conference action again on Saturday, 1/12, as they travel to Alamosa, Colo. to face the rival Grizzlies of Adams State University.  The Grizzlies are currently sitting in 12th place in the RMAC with a 1-7 record in conference and 4-8 in overall play.  The game is set for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off time, with the Cowboys' game to follow shortly after completion of the women's game.  If you can't make the trip up to Alamosa to watch your Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the game online via Live Stats.  If you would like to watch the action live online, you can click HERE for the America One Network streaming video.
