Cowgirls Drop Regular Season Finale, 3-0

NMHU Hosts First Round Playoff Game

Box Score Denver, Colo. – The Cowgirl Soccer team finished the 2013 regular season with a  3-0 loss to the Regis University Rangers, on Nov. 3.  The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead in the first half.  In the second half, it was Cowgirl mistakes that gave Regis two more goals and the victory in the regular season finale.  Despite the loss, NMHU will host a first round RMAC tournament match on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6:00 p.m.  The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Justin Wagar, finish the regular season with a 9-6-3 overall record and 7-6-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

RU 3 – NMHU 0
The Rangers got off to a great start in the match when they were able to convert the first goal of the game in the 15th minute.  Regis was awarded a corner kick and they took advantage of the first shot opportunity of the game by placing a header into the back of the net, taking an early 1-0 lead.

The teams were even in first half shot attempts, with five apiece but the Rangers took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Things went wrong for the Cowgirls immediately in the second half.  The Rangers saw their lead extended to two goals (2-0) when the Cowgirls put the ball into their own net.  The own goal mistake put NMHU in a hole and turned the second half momentum towards the Rangers.

The mistakes kept plaguing the Cowgirls and the next misfortune would result in a penalty kick for Regis.  In the 65th minute, the Cowgirls committed a foul against Regis in the penalty box and the referee pointed to the spot.  The Rangers wasted no time in capitalizing on their good fortune, converting the penalty kick to increase their lead 3-0.  Regis outshot NMHU in the second half 7-4 and finished off the regular season with a 3-0 win on their home field.

Despite the loss, the Cowgirls remain in fourth place in the final 2013 RMAC Women's Soccer standings.  They will open up the postseason with a first round home match and will have the opportunity to avenge their defeat in the regular season finale.  Their opponent will be the Regis University Rangers who moved up to fifth place in the conference standings with their victory over the Cowgirls.

The winner of the match between the Rangers and the Cowgirls will face an undefeated Colorado School of Mines.  The Orediggers won the 2013 RMAC Women's Soccer regular season championship with a perfect 14-0 conference record.  Mines was 17-0-1 in all matches played this season and will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Cowgirls' opening round match against the Rangers will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Perkins Stadium.  If you can't make the trip out the "Perk" to catch your Cowgirls in action, you can watch the match via the live internet video stream provided by the America One Network.
