Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Women's Basketball team hosted the NCAA DII fourth ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Feb. 15. The Cowgirls were looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the RMAC's first place team, CMU. The Mavericks held their reputation as the best team in the RMAC, defeating the Cowgirls 92-53. With the loss, the Cowgirls led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 4-14 record in the RMAC and 4-18 in overall play.
At the beginning of the game the Cowgirls struck first, gaining a 2-0 lead. After the first score, the Mavericks went on a 16-0 run going up by 14 points (16-2).
The Cowgirls attempted to stay in the game with scores by
China Smith and
Alyssa Lopez. The two Cowgirls combined for NMHU's first 13 points.
By the five minute mark of the first half, the Mavericks lead was 22 points (41-19). The Cowgirls were able to cut the lead to 17 by the end of the first half.
In the second half the Cowgirls continued to play catch up, but they could not close the deficit. CMU persistently scored points, winning the game by the final score of 92-53.
Alyssa Lopez played hard throughout the game, shooting 40 percent and scoring 20 points.
The Cowgirls will be honoring senior
Ashley Zaragoza, on Feb. 16, in their last home game of the season. The game is also NMHU Basketball Pink Night sponsored by Community 1st Bank. NMHU Athletics and Community 1st Bank have teamed up to raise funds in support of the fight against Breast Cancer.
