Box Score 2 The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team lost both games of their Colorado road trip this weekend. The dropped their first game on Friday, Feb. 22, to the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines, by the final score of 78-70. They followed that up with a 103-86 loss in Lakewood, Colo. to the Cougars of Colorado Christian University.
CSM 78 – NMHU 70
At the beginning of the first half, the Cowgirls started the scoring going on an 8-2 run by the 16:16 mark. Executing every chance available, the Cowgirls were able to keep their lead until the 10: 15 mark, when CSM tied the game 17- 17.
The two teams battled until the end of the first half. At the end of the half, the Cowgirls were up by one 35-34.
In the second half the Cowgirls battled for the lead. At the 13:35 mark of the second half
Eboni Jacobs scored a big 3- pointer making the score 47-46.
The Cowgirls would fall behind by seven at the 10:14 mark of the second half. With 3:01 left in the game, CSM's lead had stretched to 10 points. The Cowgirls could not take control of the game and would lose 78-70.
CCU 103 – NMHU 86
The Cowgirls scored first in the game, but the Cougars took control of the game and led for the first seven minutes of the game. NMHU fought back and two free throws by
Alyssa Lopez gave them a one point lead (12-11). Lopez followed that up with a 3-pointer as the Cowgirls went on a 7-0 run to go up by six points (17-11).
The Cowgirls seemed to have the momentum and they managed to gain a 13 point lead (34-21) with 3:57 remaining in the first half. CCU was able to turn the tide and when the final buzzer sounded they had cut the Cowgirls' lead down to just one point (40-39).
China Smith hit a layup at the beginning of the second half, but the Cougars had gained the momentum and they would control the game in the second half. Their offense was on fire and they began to extend their lead. CCU would lead by as much as 24 points.
When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, the Cougars were victorious by the final score of 103-86.
Alyssa Lopez and
Michelle Traynham had good games for the Cowgirls. Lopez led the team with 22 points and Traynham scored 17 points.
The Cowgirls will continue conference action on Mar. 3 when they travel to Silver City, N.M. to take on in-state rival Western New Mexico University in the final game of the regular season. The Mustangs are 3-18 in the RMAC and 4-21 in overall play. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off time.
