Box Score Abilene, Texas – The NMHU Football team lost to NCAA DI opponent Abilene Christian University, on Sept. 14, by the final score of 52-28.  The Cowboys were doing well in the first half, down 10-7, until the Wildcats scored two quick touchdowns in the span of 30 seconds to take a 24-7 lead into halftime.  The Wildcats dominated the third quarter, scoring four touchdowns and taking a 52-14 lead.  The Cowboys, having scored a touchdown in the third quarter, managed to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  But it was too little too late for the Pokes and the Wildcats ended up victorious on their home field, 52-28.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Eric Young, are now 1-1 in the 2013 season after two non-conference games.

ACU 52 – NMHU 28

Abilene Christian opened up the scoring on Saturday night, with a field goal and a touchdown, to take a 10-0 lead early on.   The Cowboys were still very much in the game and scored a touchdown of their own at the end of the first quarter to cut the ACU lead down (10-7).

The score remained 10-7 for much of the second quarter until the Wildcats scored a touchdown with just 35 seconds left in the half.  ACU took nine plays to drive 80 yards down the field for the score and ate up 3:10 of time.  The Cowboys started their next drive from their own 10 yard line with just 31 seconds left in the second quarter.  QB Emmanuel Lewis completed a five-yard pass to Michael Harrison, but Harrison fumbled the ball and ACU took over on the NMHU 15-yard line.  The Wildcats took two pass plays to put the ball in the end zone and had a 24-7 lead going into the locker room at the half.

The Wildcats' blew up the scoreboard in the third quarter.  They scored a touchdown on their first drive of the half and returned an NMHU fumble for a touchdown on the very next drive.  The Cowboys were able to get a touchdown two drives later, using 13 plays to march 81 yards down the field in just 2:03.  Michael Harrison scored for the Cowboys on an 18 yard pass from Emmanuel Lewis.  But the Wildcats struck quickly on the ensuing drive with a 75 yard completion for a touchdown.  After a three-and-out by the Cowboys, ACU scored again with a 15-play drive that went 72 yards down the field.  The Wildcats were in total control of the game with a 52-14 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Pokes' NaDerris Ward recovered an ACU fumble in the fourth quarter and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown with just 10:11 remaining in the game.  The Cowboys scored again when QB Lance Orender connected with WR Lajuantae Hicks on a 24-yard touchdown with 1:16 left.  The two fourth-quarter scores cut the ACU lead down to 52-28, but when time ran out the Wildcats would secure a 24 point victory on their home field.

QB Emmanuel Lewis threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, going 32-44 as a passer.  Lewis also had one interception and was sacked three times.

WR Michael Harrison caught eight passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns against the Wildcats.

WR Josh Nobles caught 11 passes for 121 yards.

DL Otis Jones had another great day on defense for the pokes with 8.5 tackles.  Jones finished with two sacks and four tackles for a loss.
