Cowgirls Tame Wildcats, 1-0

Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Women's Soccer team earned their first victory of the 2013 season against the Wildcats of Central Washington University on Sept. 7. The Cowgirls started the game very quick with a goal in the third minute of the game. They continued to take control of the lead and never looked back. The entire team played very well as a solid unit.

NMHU 1 – CWU 0

The Cowgirls were on the offensive attack right out of the gate in the first period. They pressured the Wildcats' defense into a corner kick situation. The goal came from a rebound off the corner kick. The goal scorer was junior Alyssa Saucedo and it was her first goal of the season. The two assists were from sophomore Jasmine Waugaman and sophomore Crystal Schuder. The two assists were also the first of the season for Schuder and Waugaman.

The Cowgirls controlled the ball possession for most of the first period. They out-numbered the Wildcats six shots to four. They also had an advantage in the corner kicks category, four to two. Senior GK Nikita Rivera had one save in the first period. The Cowgirls' defense was also firing on all cylinders in the first half, playing very good defense. The Cowgirls' defense only allowed four shots.

In the second period, the Cowgirls were determined to keep on playing with the same team intensity. The Cowgirls' defense played as one collective unit. The Cowgirls had to match the Wildcats' intensity. The Wildcats would finish with three yellow cards and one red card.

The Cowgirls kept their composure and continued to fight on to victory. Nikita Rivera held down the defense as the anchor by grabbing another three saves. In the 80th minute, the Wildcats threated to tie the game with a header shot by Savanna Moorehouse and Rivera once again came up with the save. She ended up with four saves and helped the Cowgirls to earn their first victory of the season.

The Cowgirls (1-0-1) will continue their 2013 season on the road this Tuesday, Sept.10, at West Texas A&M University. Tuesday's game will be played at 6:00 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
