Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The New Mexico Highlands University women's basketball team (8-9, 4-9 RMAC) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) was defeated by the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves (14-5, 11-2) Friday night (Jan. 31 ) at the John A. Wilson Complex with a final score of 67-51.
Opening the first half, Cowgirl
Anngelina Sanchez was first to put three points on the scoreboard for New Mexico Highlands.
Brittany Neeley gave Highlands a 10-6 lead on a jumper, but CSU Pueblo's Taylor Fox – the games' leading scorer with 18 - answered with a triple. A pair of free throws by the visitors an 11-10 lead, its first of the game. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the half before Fox delivered a layup making the score 30-26 ThunderWolves at the break.
Senior
Alyssa Lopez led Highlands with 16 points for the game.
Tied at 35 in the second half, the visitors went on a 15-1 run to push the advantage to double-digits for good. Two fastbreak layups and a triple from Fox quickly pushed the lead to seven. Lopez split from the line for the Cowgirls, but Fox hit a lay-up. A steal by Jenay Locke and an outlet pass to Ashley Piper pushed the visitors lead to 10. Locke hit a pair from the line and a layup by Piper pushed the lead to 14.
CSU-Pueblo led by as much as 21 before winning by 16.
The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow at 6 p.m., when they host UC-Colorado Springs.
