Soccer Overcomes Rain for 2-1 Win against Adams State

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – It may have been cold and rainy Tuesday night (Oct. 21) in Las Vegas, New Mexico, but that did not stop an explosive beginning in the second half.

With the Cowgirls up 1-0 at half, the Grizzlies netted the equalizer early in the second half. But just 1:33 later, New Mexico Highlands (8-3-3, 5-2-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored the game-winner in a 2-1 win against Adams State (2-10-2, 1-7-2 RMAC) on the pitch at Perkins Stadium.

Tied at one in the 48th minute, Highlands was awarded a corner kick on the right side. Junior Nicole Millar crossed the ball into the box for senior Alyssa Saucedo who found the back of the net for the second time, and the second game-winner, this season.

Once again, it was the bench who jump started the Cowgirls. In the 38th minute, sophomore Anyssa Dagnino was tackled at the top of the box. However, the loose ball found freshman Mallory Bostic waiting straight on from the goal 15 yards out. Bostic shot to the high side to avoid the defenders as she netted her second goal in three games.

Trailing 1-0 at half, Adams State wasted no time in scoring the equalizer in the 47th minute. Shelby McBain crossed the ball from the left side about 35 yards out to find Karen Toro in front of the goal on the right side. It was Toro's first tally of the season.

Adams State outshot the Cowgirls 15-10 in the game, including 7-6 in shots on goal.

In goal, Cowgirl's freshman Sarah Beecher picked up the win, grabbing six saves and improving to 8-3-3 on the year. Molly O'Connor grabbed four saves in the loss for Adams State and fell to 2-9-2 on the year.

Highlands returns to action Friday at Colorado Mesa at 4:30 p.m.
