Soccer Loses Final Leg of Season-Opening Road Trip

Box Score ANGELO, Texas – The New Mexico Highlands soccer team was able to match Angelo State  with seven shots on goal, but four of the Rambelles' attempts found the back of the net as Highlands (1-1) lost to Angelo State (2-0) 4-0 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7) in Angelo, Texas.

"I am really disappointed in our performance today," head coach Justin Wagar said. "We looked as if we did not even want to be out there , allowing Angelo State several shots on goal and great scoring chances while creating few opportunities for themselves."

Highlands at one point led 4-1 in shots on target, but it was Angelo State who drew first blood in the 11th minute. The Rambelle's Haley Mendel scored her third goal of the year on a shot by range on the back post on a pass from Callie Smith. Cowgirls sophomore Anyssa Dagnino followed with a shot on goal, but Rambelle's goalie Shantel Wittke – who saved every shot faced to improve to 2-0 on the year in the box – scooped up the save.

In a span of six minutes just moments later, freshman Mallory Bostic put a pair of shots on goal while junior Crystal Schuder added another. All three attempts were grabbed by the Angelo State keeper.

Angelo State scored on a cross in the 30th minute to take the 2-0 lead into intermission.

The home team added a penalty kick score moments into the second half and another before the game ended as the home team claimed the four-goal victory.

Cowgirls freshman goalie Sarah Beecher fell to 1-1, allowing four goals while grabbing three saves.

The soccer team returns to action Thursday night for its home opener against West Texas A&M. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
