Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M.- Davonte Lynch had a great performance today as he broke multiple tackles to rush for 120 yards, including a 51-yard rushing touchdown. Despite Lynch's performance, Colorado Mesa would take advantage of the Cowboys giveaways and take the game 31-6.
The Cowboys started the game by moving the chains and getting into Mavericks territory. After a failed fourth down attempt by the Cowboys, Colorado Mesa took advantage and started their day by scoring in the air on four plays to give them a 7-0 lead.
The Cowboys again would drive down the field, and put themselves in good field position but would give the ball away on an interception. The Mavs would again take advantage and hit a field goal in the top of the second quarter to build their lead to 10-0.
Pressure from the Mavericks would force another giveaway by the Cowboys. This turnover would help the Mavericks build even more momentum and bring the lead to 17. The Cowboys would go into the break down 17-0.
The third quarter would not start the way the Cowboys wanted. The Mavs drove down the field to score once again to build their lead, 24-0. The Cowboys did not let the score get in their way as Lynch would bring energy to the Cowboy sideline. Several plays into the drive, Lynch ran like his brother and scored with a powerful 51-yard rushing touchdown to put the Cowboys on the board. The Cowboys decided to take a chance and go for two, but were stopped just short by the Mavericks defense.
The rest of the quarter would be a stalemate, as both teams would not score.
In the fourth quarter a costly turnover on a punt return would put the Mavericks at the Cowboys 5 yard line. The Mavs scored in three plays and went up 31-6 to seal the game.
Other key players in the game were
Don Carter (10.5 tackles) and
Shelton Miles (10 tackles). They were all over the field, racking up over 20 tackles combined.
The Cowboys go on the road next weekend as they face Western State in Gunnison, Colorado on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
