Cowgirls fall to Yellow Jackets

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D.-The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team fell to Black Hill State University tonight in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play 70-38. Your Cowgirls carry an overall record of 2-6, RMAC 0-4.

In the first quarter, both teams started off slow and the Cowgirls were battling it out on the board with the Yellow Jackets. Freshman Kaylani Maiava had the first points for the Cowgirls knocking down one of two free throws. Then, senior Michelle Traynham followed with a triple to cut the Cowgirls deficiet to two. Senior Miranda Martinez knocked down both free throws to help the Cowgirls out. The Yellow Jackets were just draining shots from the arc and had the lead on your Cowgirls 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets came out attacking the paint and finding their way to the free throw line. The Cowgirls started off cold but Maiava got them going again with some free points. Traynham would come back with back to back jumpers and a shot from downtown to bring the Cowgirls closer. With 23 seconds left in the half Martinez knocked one down from beyond the arc to cut the Yellow Jackets lead. Going into halftime Cowgirls trailed 46-22.

In the third quarter, Michelle Traynham came out the locker room ready to knock down shoots. For the first minute, the Cowgirls held the Yellow Jackets and found Traynham for a three. Then Miranda Martinez drove in for a lay-up bringing them closer. Kaylani Maiava also hit a jumper in the paint to help them out, but the Yellow Jackets continued to get those free points.

In the fourth quarter, the Cowgirls had a tough time finding a way to get the ball in the hole but with three seconds left in the game sophomore Kylee Reibel found a way and got to the basketball making a layup.
