Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo.- The Cowgirl basketball team found something that they had been missing for over two months, a win. The win came over Adams St. in a 51-49 victory over the Grizzles.
In the Cowgirls first possession
Michelle Traynham hit a three which would set the tone for the Cowgirls. After
Brittany Brown drew a foul and hit two free throws to give the Cowgirls the 4-3 lead, neither team would score for over three minutes. With just 3:10 left in the first quarter Traynham would send another one in from behind the arc for give the Cowgirls the four-point lead. After another three from Traynham and a pair at the stripe for Martinez the Cowgirls would end the first quarter up 17-7.
The second quarter would see a three-and-a-half-minute drought for both teams as it was a layup and one by
Kaylani Maiava at the 6:38 mark that would be the first points for either team in the quarter. A jumper by the Grizzles' Broyers would cut the Cowgirl lead at 24-11.
Kristy Marquez would hit a jumper after a Grizzly free throw to put the Cowgirls up by 16. The Grizzlies and the Cowgirls would trade baskets and the Grizzles would cut the lead down to 13. With just 13 seconds left in the first half Kylee Reible would hit two from the line to give the Cowgirls the 15 points lead at the half, 33-18.
The Grizzles were persistent and would give the Cowgirls some trouble in the second half. The Cowgirls would strike first on a jumper the senior
Kristy Marquez. From there the Cowgirls could not convert on their next four possessions as they had 2 missed shot and two turnovers. The Grizzlies tried to take advantage but were only able to cut the lead down to 13. The Cowgirls would go n a 7-0 run to take the 42-22 lead midway through the 3
rd quarter. But once again the Cowgirls would have two turnovers and two missed shots in their next four possessions that allowed the Grizzles to linger. In the final 2:25 of the 3
rd the Grizzlies would go on a 6-0 run to cut the Cowgirls lead down to 10 going into the 4
th quarter.
The Cowgirls knew they were 10 minutes away from their first conference win of the season, but unfortunately it wouldn't be as easy as they hoped it would be. At the 2:27 mark of the 4
th quarter the Cowgirls', at one point, 20-point lead was down to just three. Neither team seemed like they wanted in the win as the next two minutes both team would take bad shots and turn the ball over and no one scoring.
With 32 seconds left Simioni hit a free throw to expand the Cowgirls lead to four. 12 seconds later the Grizzlies' Brown would find herself at the line shooting two. The first one went up an was good. The next shot was off the rim and out of bounce, Cowgirls ball. After a timeout to talk situation that Cowgirls would come out, but the grizzlies would force a turnover and the Grizzlies' Jaycox would hit a three with 15 seconds left in the game. The Cowgirls would not waste time getting the ball back in play and down the court. With just three seconds on the clock Traynham would draw the foul and head to the line. Traynham would hit both to make it a two-point game. The Grizzlies would heave a last second half court shot, but it was off the mark. The Cowgirl would win the game 51-49
