SILVER CITY, N.M.- After an exciting victory on Saturday evening, the Cowgirls will gear up for their last match of the season in Silver City against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs.
The Mustangs currently hold an overall record of 9-18 and hold six wins in the conference. After a tough loss to Fort Lewis on Saturday for the Mustangs, the Cowgirls will be looking for the upset on their Senior Night. The Mustangs will be honoring two seniors, both of which are crucial to the Western offense.
This will be the second encounter this season for the two teams. The first game resulted in favor of the Mustangs, 73-59. Junior guard
Michelle Traynham led the team in assists and in total points with 13, just shy of Mustang Jada Grady, who led both teams with 18. The Cowgirls held the lead for the first half of the game, but the Mustangs came out of the locker room ready to play, scoring the first two jumpers of the second half grabbing their first lead of the game. The Cowgirls remained strong through the third quarter, but were overwhelmed by the powerful Mustang offense.
The Cowgirls are going into Friday's match with a very positive attitude. Senior
Kristy Marquez comments, "It's not about the record defining us, it's about the effort that were putting in to finish strong, no matter what."
Well put, Kristy! Your Highlands family is behind you, ladies!
