Gunnison, CO.- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Basketball team fell to Western State Colorado University in their last Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. The Cowgirls end their 2016-17 season with an overall record of 2-23 and 1-21 RMAC.

The Cowgirls started of strong as Freshman
Ari Baca hit a jumper to get them on the board. Then Sophomore
Ida Valencia knocked down a trey to get them down by one to the Mountaineers. Western Colorado answered back with a three by Katelynn Martinez, but then Valencia hit another three to give the Cowgirls the lead 10-9. The Cowgirls end the first quarter up by one 12-11
To start off the second quarter, Junior
Kaelin Shaffer hit a jumper to bring the Cowgirls up by three. The Mountaineers did not back down and battled back as they took the lead with seven minutes left in the quarter. The Cowgirls struggled the last couple minutes and went into the half down by five. Â

The Mountaineers started the third quarter off with a lay-up to bring the Cowgirls down by 7, but Baca answered back with a jumper to bring it back down to five. After that the Mountaineers went on a 17-0 run to bring the Cowgirls down by 20. With 45 second left Shaffer drove in and laid it up to end the third,
The Cowgirls struggled in the fourth quarter until Freshman
Juliana Gurule hit a shot from the field goal line.
