Box Score Las Vegas, NM -Â The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team fell to Angelo State 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex.
Â
The Cowgirls twice had a one goal advantage, but two late scores by the Belles--including the winning goal off a free kick--stymied HU's effort to pick up the first win of the season.
Â
The Cowgirls got on the board early when
Graciela Lopez nailed her first goal of the season just past the eight minute mark. The teams battled evenly over the rest of the first half, but Angelo's top scorer, Trenadey Scott, found the back of the net with just over two minutes left in the half to tie the match at intermission.
Â
HU regained the lead on a goal by Brianna Fatten at the midway mark of the second half but ASU responded with a goal just five minutes later to knot the score at 2-2. Officials awarded Angelo State a free kick just two minutes after the tying goal and the Belles converted to take a 3-2 advantage ASU would hold on to the lead to drop the Cowgirls to 0-2-1 for the season.
Â
The HU ladies have a busy week ahead-- A Wednesday night match-up with UTEP in El Paso is followed by conference contests versus RMAC opponents Adams State (Friday @11am) and Fort Lewis (Sunday@1pm) in Taos.
