Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cowgirls, Mavericks play to 1-1 tie Friday night

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team used a late goal by Janis Martinez to even the game with Colorado Mesa and neither team could find the game-winner in overtime as the Cowgirls tied the Mavericks, 1-1, Friday night at Sanchez Family Stadium.

NMHU (1-9-1 overall, 1-6-1 RMAC) and CMU (4-5-3, 2-4-2) played a scoreless first half and nobody found the back of the net until the 61st minute. The Mavericks were on the break when Lexi Newton found Lauren Thompson who quickly hit Ryanne Parker in stride and she scored into the bottom-right corner to take a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until a corner kick for the Cowgirls in the 79th minute. The ball bounced around the front of the goal before Martinez put it in to tie the score at 1-1.

The Cowgirls took just one shot in overtime, but fended off the CMU attack (six shots) to tie for the first time this season.

NMHU was outshot by CMU 19-15, but had more shots on goal (8-6). Breanna Fatten led the Cowgirls with four shots while Martinez and Tania Salcedo took three shots apiece. In goal, Briana Ruelas finished with five saves.

The Cowgirls return to action 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Western State Colorado at Sanchez Family Stadium.
