WICHITA FALLS, Texas --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team recovered from a 1-0 first-half deficit when
Tania Salcedo scored for the Cowgirls in the second half and helped take the game to overtime, but NMHU fell in the first overtime period and lost 2-1 Thursday at Stang Park.
The Cowgirls (0-1) trailed 1-0 15 minutes into the second half before Salcedo took a shot from the right side and beat the Mustang keeper to tie the match, 1-1.
NMHU kept the pressure on as a
Brooke Niimi shot was saved just two minutes later and three minutes after that
Alondra Gildo-Ceballos took a shot that had to be saved as the score remained 1-1.
The teams combined for just one shot in the final 10 minutes as the game went to overtime where MSU's Madison Williams scored 20 seconds in to end the game at 2-1.
The Mustangs got on the board first in the 19th minute when Senna Garcia scored on an assist from Emma Baley.
The Cowgirls were outshot by the Mustangs 14-8, but both teams took five shots on goal. Gildo-Ceballos and Salcedo led NMHU with two shots apiece.
Briana Ruelas started the game at keeper for the Cowgirls and played the first 21 minutes while
Karina Vega entered in the 22
nd minute and played the rest of the contest.
NMHU returns to Las Vegas to play its home opener 11:30 a.m. Saturday when the Cowgirls host St. Mary's (Texas) at Sanchez Family Stadium.
