LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands football team is looking for its first 2-0 start to a season since 2012 as the Cowboys host Adams State in their home opener 1 p.m. Saturday at Sanchez Family Stadium.

NMHU is also looking for its first 2-0 start in RMAC play since 2014 as after losing its first two non-conference contests, the Cowboys defeated Western New Mexico and Fort Lewis to open conference action.

LAST WEEK FOR THE COWBOYS | SEASON STATS
The Cowboys are looking for the 2-0 start after going on the road and defeating Fort Lewis 45-31 on Aug. 31 – breaking NMHU's 11-game road losing skid and its first win away from Las Vegas since beating Chadron State on Halloween in 2015.

The Cowboys fell behind the Skyhawks 7-0 in the first quarter, but would go on to outscore Fort Lewis 35-7 through midway into the third quarter – capped by a Danny Cameron touchdown pass to D.J. McFadden with 7:05 left in the third quarter to give the Cowboys a 35-14 advantage.

The Skyhawks wouldn't get within 14 points of the Cowboys the rest of the way as key defensive stops (including a fourth-and-short situation deep in NMHU territory) and the NMHU offense kept Fort Lewis from getting any closer.

Cameron finished 14-for-21 for 246 yards and four touchdowns (career high) for the Cowboys while McFadden had five catches for 108 yards and two scores. NMHU also chewed up the Skyhawks on the ground for 200-plus yards, led by Dion Alston's 119 yards rushing on 13 carries while Dazmon Scott had 64 yards on 11 attempts and Elijah Boyd had 43 yards and two scores on 11 carries.

Defensively, Malik Brown earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors (NMHU's first RMAC weekly football honor since 2014) by picking off two passes (both in the second half) while adding four tackles and a pass breakup. Eli Schoettmer had a team-high 11 tackles while C.J. Waite and Caleb Glennon also reached double figures in tackles with 10 each with Glennon adding an interception.

ABOUT ADAMS STATE | SEASON STATS
The Grizzlies started the season with a 49-7 loss on the road to Colorado School of Mines – a game in which it fell behind 28-0 after the first quarter.

Adams State finished the game with 132 yards (25 on the ground) of offense compared to 501 for CSM. Adams State quarterback Nick Rooney went 17-for-41 for 107 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Chad Hovasse, who led the RMAC in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns last season, was the Grizzlies' top receiver with six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Tyree Harris led Adams State on the ground with 15 yards on seven carries.

The Grizzlies were selected to finish ninth in the preseason poll, ahead of Western State and NMHU.
