Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Basketball team hosted a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match-ups this weekend as the Cowgirls gave a scare to both teams.

AGAINST DIXIE STATE: Dixie State was the first match-up for the Cowgirls as the Trailblazers were able to jump out to a 25-13 lead after the first quarter.

Maiah Rivas caught fire in the second as she connect on 8 straight points for the Cowgirls and cut the Trailblazer lead to 2 points with 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, the Trailblazers were able to maintain the lead while taking a 33-28 lead at half.

The Trailblazers were able to keep the momentum going in to the third as they extended their lead to as much as 8 points, while maintaining a 50-45 lead at the end of the third.

To start the fourth,
Ashley Antone and
Maiah Rivas both connected for the Cowgirls to cut the lead to one point. The Cowgirl defense continued to play tough as the forced the Trailblazers to miss their first three shots of the quarter while also forcing 2 turnovers.

Maiah Rivas would find
Ashley Antone in the paint, for one of Rivas's 5 assists, to give the Cowgirls the lead with 7:15 remaining in the game. The Trailblazers would answer quickly with a three of their own to regain the lead. Â

The Trailblazers would go on to outscore the Cowgirls 13-7 from that point on to take a 66-58 win.

Ashley Antone led the way for the Cowgirls as finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.
Maiah Rivas also played well for the Cowgirls finishing with 14 points and 5 assists while
Jordyn Lewis had a fairly quiet night finishing with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

AGAINST WESTMINSTER: Westminster came in to the weekend as the number one team in the RMAC standings. The Cowgirls and Griffins would battle all night in a game that saw 14 lead changes and a tied score a total of 10 times. The Griffins largest lead in regulation was 7 points which came in the first quarter and the Cowgirls largest lead was 5 points which came in the second quarter.

The Cowgirls trailed by three points after the first quarter and outscored the Griffins by 1 quarter the rest of regulation, to go in to overtime tied at 63. The Cowgirls held the Griffins to 41% shooting which included 38.5% from the three.

During the OT period, the Griffins held the Cowgirls to one basket and 16% shooting to outscore the Cowgirls 11-3 and take a 74-66 win.

Jordyn Lewis led the way with 27 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals while
Ashley Antone added 19 points, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks and
Maiah Rivas finished with 15 points and 9 assists.

The Cowgirls will be back in action on Wednesday night for their final game in 2019 as they host CSU-Pueblo at 5 pm at Wilson Complex!
