Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands Women's basketball team heads to Colorado for their opening weekend of conference play against Fort Lewis College on Friday night at 5:30 pm and Adams State on Saturday night at 5:30 pm.
ABOUT FORT LEWIS: The Cowgirls and the Skyhawks have already matched up this season in a non-conference game in which the Skyhawks won 77-48 in Durango, CO. On the season, the Skyhawks average 76.2 points, 49.2 rebounds, and 18.8 assists per game. The Skyhawks are also shooting 41.6% from the field which includes 30.2% from three. The Skyhawks have a balanced attack this year as only one player averages more than 10 points per game. Jordan Vasquez (11.8 points, 7 rebounds), Katrina Chandler (9 points, 3.6 assists), Jordan Carter (9 points, 5 rebounds), Sydney Candelaria (8.6 points, 5 rebounds), and Kayla Herrera-Flores (8.5 points, 8 rebounds) will look to aid the Skyhawks this weekend.
ABOUT ADAMS STATE: The Grizzlies, who are looking for their first win of the season, are shooting 32% from the field which includes 28% from three while averaging 42.6 points, 27.2 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. Zakiya Beckles (10 points), Lauren Gutierrez (7.6 points), and Ally McKenzie (5.3 points) will look to lead the Grizzlies this weekend.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS: The Cowgirls are coming off a 66-59 win over Northern New Mexico while averaging 60 points, 11.4 assists and 32 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are also shooting 36.6% from the field which includes 33.8% from three on the season.
Jordyn Lewis leads the way for the Cowgirls offensively as she is averaging 19.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest.
Ashley Antone (12.2 points, 6.4 rebounds),
Maiah Rivas (10.4 points, 4.8 assists), and
Desiree Forster (10 points, 3.6 rebounds) will also look to lead the Cowgirls to their first conference wins of the season.
