Las Vegas --- The New Mexico Highlands Football team had their Homecoming game rained on by the Dixie State trailblazers, 55-0, at the Leveo and Patricia Sanchez Family Stadium in Las Vegas, NM.
The Cowboys struggled to maintain any offensive consistency throughout the game as they managed a mere 80 yards on 40 rushes.
James Budgett ran for a total of 29 yards off 16 carries and his longest carry was an 11-yard rush.
The passing game didn't fare much better as the Cowboys passed for 33 total yards on 6 of 33 attempts. Quarterback
Ramone Atkins stepped in for the Cowboys and threw for 26 yards on 5 of 22 attempts. The Dixie State defense was all over starting quarterback
Gunner Mefferd as he went 1 of 11 for 7 yards. Both Atkins and Mefferd combined to throw 4 interceptions, 2 a piece.The Cowboys offense continued to struggle as they only managed 10 first downs in the game with 113 total yards.
The Cowboys, defensively, had their hands full as Dixie State had a total of 416 yards, 147 passing and 269 rushing. Â
Adam Gay and
Trejen Lawrence gave all they could as they both led the team with 7 total tackles.
Jordan Gallegos and
Tre Haynes had 5 tackles each, as well. Haynes,
Malik Brown, and
Kimar Peacock all had an interception for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys will be back in action next weekend as they will face Colorado School of Mines at 12 P.M. on September 21, 2019 in Golden, CO.
