Game Recap: Football | | Justin Bustos

Football plays 1 Quarter; Ends in Lightning-Delay

Las Vegas, NM --- What started out as the perfect day to start the 2019 season for the NMHU football team, turned into a 6-hour lightning delay that resulted in the game being cancelled by both head coaches.

The Cowboys started the game well with two first downs on their opening drive. Following the second first down, the Cowboys ran for a loss of 8 yards on a tackle by Fort Lewis. This forced the Cowboys to look to pass, which led to an interception and, what would be the only games touchdown.

The Skyhawks capitalized on the turnover and were quickly ahead of the Cowboys 7-0. Eli Shoettmer and Joseph Gutierrez carried the Cowboy defense to continue to hold the Skyhawk offense as the Skyhawks were forced to punt the ball three times after their first score. The second quarter started and a Gunner Mefferd 31-yard pass complete to J'juan Muldrow from the 35 put the Cowboys in scoring position.

After a penalty, and three attempts to score, the Cowboys turned the ball over on downs, and again, were forced to hold the Skyhawk offense to punt the football. Starting at the Fort Lewis 42-yard line, Mefferd looked to pass through the Skyhawk defense as he found Muldrow for a first down. Mefferd would then set up a 32-yard pass to Donovan Hawkins and land the Cowboys again within scoring position. The Cowboys would eventually lose yards before the game was called, due to lightning.

The Cowboys will be back in action next Saturday where they will face Adams State in Alamosa at 1 p.m. GO COWBOYS!
