SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to even the score with Black Hills State at 3-3 in the second half thanks to three goals from
Nitza Rodriguez, but fell to the Yellow Jackets 4-3 Sunday at Ronnie Theisz Field.
BHSU (3-7 overall, 2-5 RMAC) scored three goals in the opening 26 minutes to take a 3-0 lead into the half, but the Cowgirls (1-7, 1-5) didn't go away and showed fight.
NMHU's scoring got started with a Rodriguez goal on a penalty kick in the 55th minute to make it 3-1. Rodriguez scored again 15 minutes later in the 70th minute to cut it to 3-2. Less than a minute later, Rodriguez scored again to tie the game 3-3 with less than 20 minutes remaining.
However, the tie didn't last long as BHSU's Taylor Hernandez scored two minutes later in the 73rd minute for the game-winner and make the final 4-3 as neither team scored over the final 17 minutes.
BHSU outshot NMHU 17-16, including 11-5 on shots on goals. Rodriguez paced the Cowgirls with nine shots.
Autumn Stewart got the start at keeper for NMHU, picking up seven saves.
The Cowgirls return to action Thursday as they hit the road to take on nationally ranked UCCS before playing at CSU Pueblo on Sunday.
