Cowgirls lead midway through fourth, but fall at CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team led midway through the fourth against a strong CSU Pueblo team, but fell short as the Cowgirls lost 68-55 Saturday at Massari Arena.

NMHU (3-5 overall, 0-2 RMAC) trailed 43-32 late in the third quarter before a 7-0 run capped by a Jordyn Lewis 3-pointer made it 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

The run turned into an 18-6 midway through the fourth quarter as another 3-pointer by Lewis - this one with 4:43 remaining in the contest - gave the Cowgirls a 50-49 lead on the ThunderWolves (6-1, 2-0).

However, CSU Pueblo outscores the cowgirls 19-5 the rest of the game to win by 13 points.

Lewis led NMHU with 21 points (going 4-for-8 from 3-point range) to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Sana'a Baker had 16 points as well for NMHU.

What hurt the Cowgirls, who shot 45.2 percent from the field, was 27 turnovers - leading to 28 points for the ThunderWolves.

NMHU returns to action 5 p.m. next Saturday at home against Regis.
