The New Mexico Highlands soccer team returned to the pitch for the first time in almost two years, falling at Lubbock Christian, 4-1. COVID-19 wiped out the 2020 season for the Cowgirls. The last time Highlands played a game was November 3, 2019, in a 0-4 loss to Ft. Lewis in RMAC play.
On Thursday, the Cowgirls struck first when Valeria Baca converted a penalty in the 14th minute. That attempt was the result of a red card handed out to LCU defender Kaylen McNatt after she was called for a handball in the box. McNatt's exit meant the Lady Chaps would play with 10 for the remainder of the game.
The Cowgirl defense withstood Lubbock Christian's attack until late in the first half. Makenna Pate blasted home the first LCU goal off of assists from Giorgia Terzoni and Kenley Blevins who played the ball in from the corner. The score in the 32nd minute tied the contest at 1-1 and stayed that way at half-time.
Lubbock Christian scored three goals in the second half by Avery Jennings (46:09), Arely Jiminez (62:48) and Blevins (79:16) while the Cowgirl offense was stymied.
The Lady Chaps dominated the scoresheet, outshooting Highlands 24-6 including 11-1 in the second half. Shots on goal were lopsided as well tallying 11-2 in LCU's favor. Senior goalkeeper Karina Vega (Dallas, Texas) notched 7 saves, while Megan Mirabel had a lone save for Lubbock Christian (1-0).
The New Mexico Highlands (0-1) take to the road again on September 18 when they travel to San Angelo. Kickoff is set for 12:00p MDT.
