Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands football team will play nationally ranked Western Colorado University at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon in Gunnison. The Cowboys are 2-5 overall and 1-4 in RMAC play this season. The Mountaineers are 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference action and come into Saturday's game ranked #12 in the most recent American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.
The Series: Over the course of the past ten Meetings Western Colorado holds a 6-4 lead in the series, including a 30-13 win over NMHU last year in Las Vegas. The Cowboys last win in the series was a 24-22 victory on November 9, 2019, in Gunnison.
Scouting Western Colorado University: The Mountaineers are led by Head Coach Jas Bains who is in his 13th season in Gunnison. Bains, a 2004 graduate of Fresno State, led Western Colorado to a berth in the 2021 Division II playoffs.
Western Colorado enters Saturday's game averaging 35.6 points per game on offense while allowing just 15.9 points per outing. Devon Butler is the second leading rusher in the RMAC at 74.1 yards per game. And on the defensive side, Ricky Freymond leads the RMAC with six sacks this season.
Hudson File: Head Coach
Ron Hudson is in his second season at the helm of the Cowboys. He was introduced as the Head Coach at NMHU on January 6th, 2022. Hudson is a graduate of Muskingum College (OH) where he was a four-year starting center for the Fighting Muskies football team.
Last Outing: The Cowboys fell to Colorado State University - Pueblo 56-7 last Saturday at Sanchez Family Stadium in Las Vegas. The Cowboys never got on track against the ThunderWolves as they were outgained 510 to 158. The lone score of the afternoon for NMHU came by way of a 46 yard fumble recovery from Ginnis Gannon in the second quarter.
By The Numbers: Seven weeks into the season, the Cowboys are averaging 22.4 points per game on offense while giving up just over 34 points per game. NMHU is 3rd in the RMAC with 173.4 rushing yards per game.

Roster Break Down: This year's edition of the Cowboy's roster features 39 freshmen, 14 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 22 Seniors. 13 different states are represented on this year's roster with California (32), New Mexico (31), and Texas (16) leading the way.
