Las Vegas, New Mexico - Colorado Mesa defeated New Mexico Highlands 38-24 in the season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Sanchez Family Stadium. The Cowboys finish the season with an overall record of 2-9 and finish 1-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Mavericks are 6-5 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Colorado Mesa jumped out to a 21-0 lead with a pair of first quarter touchdowns and a score early in the second quarter. Will McDaniel got the Cowboys on the board with a 53 yard field goal at the 4:53 mark of the second quarter. Colorado Mesa answered with a field goal late in the quarter and took a 24-3 lead into the halftime break.
The Cowboys outscored the Mavericks 21-14 in the second half on the power of touchdown runs by
Shawntay Mills Jr. and
Jonathan Jerry. The final score of the game came by way of a 44 yard touchdown reception by
Teneil Nichols from
Hunter Watts.
Jonathan Jerry, with 71 rushing yards and 75 passing yards, posted 149 yards of total offense.
Shawntay Mills Jr. had 60 yards on 16 carries while Tyreek-Styles Obichere put up 74 yards of total offense for the Cowboys.
Senior
Devin Coney led the Cowboys with nine total tackles Saturday. AJ Hernadez and Xavier Braboy each intercepted a pass.
