Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands football team heads back to Colorado this weekend to face the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. Kick-off at Marv Kay Stadium is set for 12:00 pm. NMHU is 2-7 overall and 1-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers, 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the RMAC, are currently ranked #1 in the most recent NCAA Division II Polls
The Series: Saturday's game marks the 58th meeting all time between the Cowboys and Orediggers with CSM holding a 29-26-2 edge in the series history. The Orediggers won last season 54-16 in Las Vegas. The Cowboys last win in the series was 42-37 in 2012.
Scouting The Colorado School of Mines: This is Pete Sterbick's first season at the helm of the Oredigger program having spent the previous three seasons as the school's Offensive Coordinator. He is a graduate of Augustana (SD) where he was a wide receiver and punter for the Vikings.
The Colorado School of Mines is among national leaders scoring nearly 48 points per outing through nine games this season. Defensively the Orediggers allow just 13.7 points per game.
Hudson File: Head Coach
Ron Hudson is in his second season at the helm of the Cowboys. He was introduced as the Head Coach at NMHU on January 6th, 2022. Hudson is a graduate of Muskingum College (OH) where he was a four-year starting center for the Fighting Muskies football team.
Last Outing: The Cowboys lost a tough one a week ago 24-21 to Chadron State College in Las Vegas. The Eagles scored the go ahead touchdown with just 1:11 remaining in the game to defeat the Cowboys. Shawntay Mills Jr had a big game for the Cowboys with 139 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown.
By The Numbers: Nine weeks into the season, the Cowboys are averaging nearly 20 points per game on offense while allowing just over 36 points per game. NMHU is 4th in the RMAC at 165.2 rushing yards per game. Shawntay Mills Jr is second in the RMAC rushing the ball at 71.3 yards per game.
Defensively, senior
Devin Coney is third in the conference with 77 tackles on the season and fifth in the RMAC in tackles for loss.
Roster Break Down: This year's edition of the Cowboy's roster features 39 freshmen, 14 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 22 Seniors. 13 different states are represented on this year's roster with California (32), New Mexico (31), and Texas (16) leading the way.
