Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team defeated Chadron State 60-47 on Saturday evening to improve to 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
After a sluggish opening quarter, the Cowgirls scored the first 11 points of the second and led the game 21-11 with 6:53 to go until the half, and they extended their lead to 27-18 at the break.
Chadron State came out of the break and outscored NMHU 17-14 in the third. The Cowgirls responded with a 19-12 effort in the final quarter which led to the 13 point victory.
As a team NMHU shot 38% (19 of 50) from the floor and 83% from the free throw line. Chadron State held a slight edge on the boards out rebounding the Cowgirls 32-20.
Juliana Aragon, 6 of 10 from the floor and 11 of 13 from the free throw line, led all scorers with 23 points on the night. She also had a team high three assists.
Delani Harris and Vamessa Herrera were both in double figures with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Aja Scott grabbed a game high eight rebounds and
Neysa Munguia had a game high four blocked shots.
The Cowgirls will hit the road for the first RMAC games of the season away from Las Vegas with games at Fort Lewis and Adams State next weekend.
