The New Mexico Highlands University football team opened the 2023 season by dropping a heart-breaking contest 28-26 in Portales to Eastern New Mexico University Thursday evening.
At the half-time break the Cowboys found themselves in a 21-0 hole after allowing a trio of rushing touchdowns to the Greyhounds. The Cowboys outscored ENMU 26-7 in the second half. Â
The Cowboys dominated 3rd quarter action as they outscored the Greyhounds 14-0.
Jonathan Jerry connected with Teneil Terry on touchdown strikes of 10 and 25 yards.
Junior
Isaiah Haywood added a defensive touchdown mid-way through the 4th quarter as he returned a fumble 59 yards to pay dirt.
Jonathan Jerry would close out the scoring for Highlands with a 1-yard touchdown run with one minute to go in the game. The ensuing two-point conversion was nullified due to a penalty called against the Cowboys.
On the night, Jerry threw for 66 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 60 yards and a score on 10 carries. Â
Teneil Nichols had two catches, both touchdowns, for 35 yards. Â
Defensively,
Devin Coney and
Roderick Woods had 11 and 10 tackles respectively. Â
The Cowboys recovered four fumbles on the night including the return by Haywood for a touchdown.Â
Up next, the Cowboys will host Western New Mexico in the home opener on Saturday, September 9th. Kick-off at Sanchez Family Stadium is set for 6:00 pm. Â
